The relationship between growth and increase in cell-wall material (wall synthesis) was investigated in hypocotyls of sunflower seedlings (Helianthus annuus L.) that were either grown in the dark or irradiated with continuous white light (WL). The peripheral three to four cell layers comprised 30–50% of the entire wall material of the hypocotyl.
