The multitude of physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms challenging cell volume constancy faces a comparable diversity of genes which are transcriptionally modified by cell swelling or cell shrinkage. The products of some of those genes serve cell volume regulation e.g., by cellular accumulation of osmolytes.
