This article examines the coverage that Toronto newspapers and illustrated press gave to the city’s support in 1885 for the mobilization of Canada’s citizen soldiers to suppress the resistance in the North-West. It argues that the Toronto press rhetorically constructed and directly fostered the massive public occupation of city streets when local boys left for the North-West and Volunteers returned to the city.
