The majority of heron species (Aves, Ardeidae) forage on aquatic prey in shallow water. Prey detection, aiming and the beginning of the capture strikes are performed while the heron's eyes are above water. For most angles, as a result of air/water light refraction, the apparent image available to a heron is vertically displaced from the prey's real position. Herons must therefore correct for refraction. We tested the hypothesis that species that forage in aquatic habitats should be more able to…
Visual accommodation and active pursuit of prey underwater in a plunge-diving bird: the Australasian gannet
TLDR
This work presents the first demonstration of the capacity for visual accommodation underwater in a plunge diving bird while capturing submerged prey detected from the air, and analyses underwater video footage for evidence that gannets use vision in the aquatic phases of hunting.
FORAGING SUCCESS AND FORAGING HABITAT USE BY CATTLE EGRETS AND LITTLE EGRETS IN THE CAMARGUE, FRANCE
TLDR
Results were consistent with the hypothesis that increasing use of habitats corresponded with higher foraging success for both species, however, when this analysis was restricted to habitats with sufficient numbers of birds to enable estimates of biomass intake, the association was no longer apparent for Little Egrets.
Echolocating bats rely on an innate speed-of-sound reference
TLDR
It is found that both newborn pups and adults are unable to adjust to the speed of sound and this suggests that bats encode the world in terms of time and do not translate time into distance, shedding light on the evolution of innate and flexible sensory perception.
Foraging activities, success and efficiency of cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis) in three habitat types in the Greater-Accra Region of Ghana.
Cattle egrets are considered one of the most widely distributed bird species globally. They are regarded as cosmopolitan due to their ability to adapt to different habitats and spread over
SPECIES ABUNDANCE AND FEEDING GUILDS OF WATERBIRDS AT PUTRAJAYA ARTIFICIAL FRESHWATER WETLAND, SELANOGOR PENINSULAR MALAYSIA
TLDR
The results show that Putrajaya artificial freshwater wetland is highly attractive to wide array of waterbirds and the Piscivore/Insectivore group was the most dominant guild and Insectivore was the rarest guild in the study area.
Avifauna richness in aquatic habitats of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan, Nigeria
Bird species offer important ecological indicator options to evaluate habitat quality. We therefore assessed avifauna richness/diversity indices and attendant effects of time of day, transect and
Bird Species Abundance and Their Correlationship with Microclimate and Habitat Variables at Natural Wetland Reserve, Peninsular Malaysia
TLDR
Results revealed that the habitat characteristics such as vegetation composition, vegetation structures and microclimate variables were the key factors that influenced the distribution, diversity and density of the wetland bird species.
LACK OF CONVERGENCE IN AQUATIC ANOLIS LIZARDS
Abstract Why convergent evolution occurs among some species occupying similar habitats but not among others is a question that has received surprisingly little attention. Caribbean Anolis lizards,

The effects of steady swimming on fish escape performance
TLDR
To quantify the performance consequences of escaping in flow, escape behavior was examined in bluegill sunfish in both still-water and during steady swimming, and escapes executed during swimming were kinematically less variable than those made in still- water.
