Cathepsins have long been considered as housekeeping molecules. However, specific functions have also been attributed to each of these lysosomal proteases. Squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCCA) 1, widely expressed in various uterine cervical cells, is an endogenous cathepsin (cat) L inhibitor.
