We present ultrastructural and biochemical evidence for the turnover of intact fibrillin microfibrils by the serine proteinases, neutrophil elastase, chymotrypsin and trypsin. Rotary shadowing electron microscopy revealed that serine proteinase treatment of intact microfibrils isolated from foetal bovine skin resulted in extensive degradation.
