Abstract Cell-free extracts of B. bifidum var. pennsylvanicus did not contain aldolase and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase. A considerable amount of fructose 6-phosphate phosphoketolase activity was found. Lactate dehydrogenase needed fructose 1,6-diphosphate for its activity. This substance could be formed by the present phosphofructokinase. Radioactivity from [1- 14 C]-glucose was recovered for 70–80% in acetate, but only 4% in CO 2 and nothing at all in lactate.
