Citalopram is an antidepressant drug within the group of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). It is widely prescribed both in Europe and in United States, and it has always been considered a “safe” drug as pure intoxication with lethal outcome is rare, and most cases of overdose, even with high doses of citalopram ingested, are reported to have an uneventful course. We report the case of a young woman found dead at home. She had been prescribed citalopram by her family doctor 3…
Clinical Toxicology of Citalopram After Acute Intoxication With the Sole Drug or in Combination With Other Drugs: Overview of 26 Cases
TLDR
Citalopram intoxications seem to proceed more severely than is known for other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor intoxications, causing drowsiness, coma, and seizures in overdose, and it is recommended to take seizure precautions and intensive care unit admission with cardiac monitoring for citaloprams-intoxicated patients.
A fatality due to cyproheptadine and citalopram.
TLDR
A 42-year-old healthy female found dead at her home with no anatomic cause of death and a recent history of suicidal ideations was found to be cyproheptadine and citalopram intoxication, and the manner was ruled a suicide.
Citalopram Overdose: a Fatal Case
TLDR
The clinician must be aware of the potential for large ingestions of citalopram to produce life-threatening effects and monitor closely for the neurologic, cardiovascular, and other manifestations that, in rare cases, can be fatal.
Contributory and Incidental Blood Concentrations in Deaths Involving Citalopram
TLDR
All cases presenting to the New South Wales Department of Forensic Medicine between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2010 in which citalopram was detected were retrieved and citalsopram contributed to death in 21.0%, and was incidental in 79.0%.
Reference Brain/Blood Concentrations of Citalopram, Duloxetine, Mirtazapine and Sertraline.
TLDR
The analytical method was successfully validated in brain tissue in terms of linearity, process efficiency, precision and accuracy, and may serve as reference concentrations in brain for forensic cases.
Safe drugs in drug facilitated crimes and acute intoxications in Northern Italy
TLDR
The non-medical use of pharmaceuticals has been identified by recent forensic literature and the present study as a significant and growing phenomenon, and its implication in fatalities should be taken into consideration and accurately investigated through appropriate toxicological analysis.
Cardiac Toxicity in Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor Users
TLDR
The results of this study seem to confirm former observations, suggesting that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors may play a potential, causative role in the pathogenesis of sudden deaths in chronic users even at therapeutic concentrations.
Clinical and analytical features of severe suicidal quetiapine overdoses – a retrospective cohort study
TLDR
Quetiapine overdoses were associated with significant toxicity and a fairly high number of complications, and a careful and often prolonged clinical observation in the more severe cases of overdose seems mandatory.
Rapid analysis of sertraline, fluvoxamine, and paroxetine in serum specimens by LC-MS-MS using a new polymer column
Three selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (sertraline, fluvoxamine, and paroxetine) in human serum specimens were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry using a new polymer
Development of bioanalytical HPLC method for simultaneous determination of the antialzhiemer, donepezil hydrochloride and the antidepressant, citalopram hydrobromide in raw materials, spiked human plasma and tablets dosage form.
TLDR
The proposed HPLC method was successfully applied to the analysis of the cited drugs in raw materials, spiked human plasma and tablets with excellent accuracy and precision.

Citalopram in fatal poisoning cases.
TLDR
It is concluded that citalopram, in spite of its high prescription rate, has not become a drug of importance in fatal poisoning cases and may not be generalisable to non-fatal poisoning cases, which are recommended to be examined separately.
Symptoms and signs of severe citalopram overdose
TLDR
The findings in five suicide attempts involving non-fatal citalopram overdose are reported, recommending early gastric lavage, administration of active charcoal, treatment of seizures, and electrocardiographic, biochemical, and toxicological monitoring in the management of such patients.
Fatality caused by a combined trimipramine-citalopram intoxication.
TLDR
A 53-year-old woman who was diagnosed as suffering from depression was found dead in her bed and an acute overdose and suicide was suggested by calculation of the parent drug to main metabolite ratios in femoral blood and liver tissue.
Studies on acute toxicity and drug levels of citalopram in the dog.
TLDR
Since no electrocardiographic changes were seen in conscious dogs even during pauses in the convulsive seizure it is concluded that citalopram does not exert cardiotoxic effects in the dog.
Citalopram overdose--review of cases treated in Swedish hospitals.
TLDR
The findings are consistent with previous reports claiming that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are less toxic compared to tricyclic antidepressants, however, there is a risk of developing serious symptoms when large doses have been ingested.
QTc Interval Prolongation Associated with Citalopram Overdose: A Case Report and Literature Review
TLDR
The case of a healthy 21-year-old woman who developed QTc interval prolongation after ingestion of approximately 400 mg citalopram is reported, and the cardiac effects of cITALopram are discussed.
Suicide by antidepressant intoxication identified at autopsy in Vienna from 1991–1997: the favourable consequences of the increasing use of SSRIs
TLDR
SSRIs turned out to be less toxic than TCAs, and the increasing use of new antidepressants did not coincide with an increased number of deaths caused by these drugs.
SSRI safety in overdose.
TLDR
The SSRI antidepressants are far safer than the TCAs in overdose, and there is no apparent difference among SSRIs with respect to overdose safety.
Citalopram concentrations in samples from autopsies and living persons
TLDR
Concentrations of citalopram in medicolegal samples from 92 autopsies and 27 living persons are described and the concentrations in samples from living persons were 0.02 to 0.3 mg/kg.
Cardiotoxicity and late onset seizures with citalopram overdose.
TLDR
Sodium bicarbonate should be considered as a treatment modality in patients with EKG abnormalities of prolongation of QRS or QTc interval after citalopram overdose, according to a 31-year-old man diagnosed with generalized clonic seizure after an argument with his parents and girlfriend.
