The reduction of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission from mother to child is one of the success stories of modern medicine and public health. In the developed world, with universal HIV counseling and testing, antiretroviral prophylaxis, scheduled Caesarean delivery if indicated, and avoidance of breastfeeding, HIV transmission from mother to infant can be <2%.
