Many cardiac interventional procedures, such as coronary angioplasty, stenting, and thrombolysis, attempt to reintroduce blood flow (reperfusion) to an ischemic region of myocardium. However, the reperfusion is accompanied by a complex cascade of cellular and molecular events resulting in oxidative damage, termed myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. In this study, we evaluated the ability of HO-4038, an N-hydroxypiperidine derivative of verapamil, on the modulation of myocardial tissue…

Trimetazidine, Administered at the Onset of Reperfusion, Ameliorates Myocardial Dysfunction and Injury by Activation of p38 Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase and Akt Signaling
TLDR
It is demonstrated that TMZ is cardioprotective when administered before reperfusion and that this protection appears to be mediated by activation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase and Akt signaling.
Verapamil Alleviates Myocardial Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury by Attenuating Oxidative Stress via Activation of SIRT1
TLDR
It is demonstrated that verapamil alleviated myocardial I/R-evoked oxidative stress partially via activation of SIRT1 antioxidant signaling, and protected against cardiac dysfunction and myocardIAL infarction accompanied by oxidative stress.
Cardioprotective Efficacy of a Novel Antioxidant Mix VitaePro Against Ex Vivo Myocardial Ischemia–Reperfusion Injury
TLDR
The results of this study suggest that the oral ingestion of VitaePro protects myocardium from ischemia/reperfusion injury by decreasing oxidative stress and apoptosis, which may be of therapeutic benefit in the treatment of cardiovascular complications.
The cardioprotective effect of danshen and gegen decoction on rat hearts and cardiomyocytes with post-ischemia reperfusion injury
TLDR
The results suggested that DG decoction could act as an anti-apoptotic and anti-ion stunning agent to protect hearts against an I/R injury.
Mitochondrial Involvement in Cardiac Apoptosis During Ischemia and Reperfusion: Can We Close the Box?
TLDR
The mitochondrial role on cardiomyocyte death and some potential pharmacological strategies aimed at preventing the opening of the box, i.e., mitochondrial dysfunction and membrane permeabilization that result into cell death are described.
Oxygen and oxygenation in stem-cell therapy for myocardial infarction.
Supplemental Oxygen Protects Heart Against Acute Myocardial Infarction
TLDR
An optimum oxygenation protocol that can be clinically applicable for treating acute MI and an optimal condition of 30-min OxCy with 95% oxygen + 5% CO2 under normobaric conditions was found to be effective for cardioprotection.

Effects of edaravone on the expression of β-defensin-2 mRNA in lung tissue of rats with myocardial ischemia reperfusion.
TLDR
In conclusion, edaravone reduced the lung injury caused by myocardial I/R in rats, and was also associated with a suppression of the inflammatory response of the lung tissue.

Attenuation of Myocardial Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury by Trimetazidine Derivatives Functionalized with Antioxidant Properties
TLDR
Pretreatment of hearts with TMZ-NH or TMZ-ΦNH significantly enhanced the recovery of heart function and decreased infarct size and the I/R-induced activation of Akt was further enhanced by TMZ- ΦNH.
Sulfaphenazole protects heart against ischemia-reperfusion injury and cardiac dysfunction by overexpression of iNOS, leading to enhancement of nitric oxide bioavailability and tissue oxygenation.
TLDR
The study established that SPZ attenuated myocardial I/R injury through overexpression of iNOS, leading to enhancement of nitric oxide bioavailability and tissue oxygenation.

C-phycocyanin protects against ischemia-reperfusion injury of heart through involvement of p38 MAPK and ERK signaling.
TLDR
Overall, these results for the first time showed that PC attenuated I/R-induced cardiac dysfunction through its antioxidant and antiapoptotic actions and modulation of p38 MAPK and ERK1/2.
Cardioprotection by Sulfaphenazole, a Cytochrome P450 Inhibitor: Mitigation of Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury by Scavenging of Reactive Oxygen Species
TLDR
The protective effect of SPZ against I/R-mediated myocardial damage appears to be due to a reduction in the superoxide level caused by its inhibition of CYP2C9, as well as scavenging of oxygen free radicals generated in the reperfused heart.
A pyrroline derivative of mexiletine offers marked protection against ischemia/reperfusion-induced myocardial contractile dysfunction.
TLDR
It is established that the compound MEX-NH provides marked protection against ischemia/reperfusion-induced contractile dysfunction in isolated hearts and a combination of reversible inhibition of Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase activity during ischemIA and site-targeted antioxidative effect upon reperfusion seems to contribute to this cardioprotection.

TLDR
It was concluded that both reperfusion arrhythmia and cell damage were directly related to oxidative damage incurred during the critical first minute of reperfusions.
