Duchenne muscular dystrophy/Becker muscular dystrophy (DMD/BMD) is a progressive multisystem neuromuscular disorder. In addition to the skeletal muscle, the myocardium in the DMD/BMD patient is dystrophin deficient which results in a progressive cardiomyopathy. The myopathic myocardium poses significant risk of increased morbidity and mortality at the time of major surgical procedures. Careful attention must be given to the DMD/BMD patient during the intraoperative and postoperative period…
Perioperative management of a patient with Becker's muscular dystrophy
TLDR
A 19-year-old male with BMD who required anesthetic care for posterior spinal fusion is presented who has the potential for difficult airway management, comorbid cardiac disease with alterations in conduction and contractility, reduced pulmonary capacity, rhabdomyolysis, and an increased sensitivity to various anesthetic agents.
Caudal epidural block instead of general anesthesia in an adult with Duchenne muscular dystrophy
TLDR
A 36-year-old adult with DMD is presented, who required anesthetic care during surgical debridement of an ischial pressure sore, and ultrasound-guided caudal epidural anesthesia was used instead of general during the surgical procedure.
Anesthetic management with remimazolam for a pediatric patient with Duchenne muscular dystrophy
TLDR
Remimazolam was shown to be safe to use for general anesthesia in a pediatric patient with DMD and lost the ability to respond to verbal commands after 20 minutes after the discontinuation of remimzolam.
Anesthetic Care of a Child With Merosin-Deficient Muscular Dystrophy
TLDR
A 9-year-old girl with MDCMD is presented who required anesthetic care during insertion of growing rods to correct neuromuscular scoliosis and options for perioperative care are reviewed.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) with Severe Cardiomyopathy
TLDR
A severe cardiomyopathy case in a 14-year-old boy with DMD, adrenal insufficiency, and severe mental retardation, who experienced a sudden cardiac arrest with successful resuscitation is reported.
Laparoscopic gynecological surgery in an adult woman with Becker muscular dystrophy performed with sevoflurane with cisatracurium anesthesia
TLDR
A 56-year-old woman with BMD who was scheduled for laparoscopic hysterectomy and bilateral adnexectomy under general anesthesia due to a mass in the uterus is described, finding the combination of sevoflurane and cisatracurium besilate is a safe and effective method for the anesthetic management of adult patients with B MD scheduled for Laparoscopic gynecological surgery.
Contemporary Cardiac Issues in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
TLDR
There is a higher mortality for DMDCardiomyopathy than for other dilated cardiomyopathies, and echocardiography has known limitations in DMD patients.
Pectoralis blocks for insertion of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator in two patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy
TLDR
Two cases of successful AICD insertion in patients with DMD are presented using unilateral pectoralis and intercostal nerve blocks supplemented with intravenous sedation and benefits of this anesthetic technique compared to general anesthesia are discussed.

The etiology and underlying pathophysiological process responsible for perioperative reactions reported in muscular dystrophy patients is discussed, and recommendations are proposed for the safe anesthetic management of these patients.

Clinical experience confirms clinical experience that total intravenous anaesthesia can be used safely in Duchenne patients without major concern, and prospective studies are necessary to establish evidence-based clinical guidelines for daily practice.

Development of cardiomyopathy in female carriers of Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies.
TLDR
Genetic anomalies can be considered the primary cause of myocardial damage in carriers of dystrophinopathic myopathies and shows the same behavior already described in DMD and BMD patients and progresses from preclinical to dilated cardiomyopathy, passing through stages ofMyocardial hypertrophy or dysrhythmias.
Abnormalities of diastolic function precede dilated cardiomyopathy associated with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Perioperative cardiac arrest in a patient with previously undiagnosed Becker's muscular dystrophy after isoflurane anaesthesia for elective surgery.
TLDR
The patient had acute rhabdomyolysis as a result of a volatile anaesthetic agent in association with an undiagnosed muscular dystrophy and has made an excellent recovery, including normal cognitive function.
