Early in the 17th century Jean-Baptiste van Helmont, a citizen of Brussels, conducted a classical experiment (99). A 5 pound willow tree was planted in a container with 200 pounds of oven-dried soil. Water was added as needed. After 5 years the tree had increased to 169 pounds, 3 ounces, but the soil itself still weighed 199 pounds and 14 ounces. The result of this experiment is usually cited to show the importance for plant growth of the small quantities of mineral nutrients derived from the…
8 Implications of Increasing Carbon Dioxide and Climate Change for Agricultural Productivity and Water Resources
Green plants need C02 to grow. A higher concentration of atmospheric C02 will stimulate the photosynthetic process, promoting plant growth and agricultural productivity without increasing the water
Enrichment in Greenhouses. Crop Responses
Mortensen, L.M., 1987. Review: C02 enrichment in greenhouses. Crop responses. Scientia Hortic., 33: 1-25. The interest in C02 enrichment has risen and declined several times throughout this century.
Greening drylands despite warming consistent with carbon dioxide fertilization effect
TLDR
The increasing response of LAI to soil moisture is consistent with the CO2 fertilization effect on water-use efficiency in water-limited ecosystems, indicating that a given amount of soil moisture has sustained greater amounts of photosynthetic foliage over time.
GENERATING USABLE AND SAFE CO2 FOR ENRICHMENT OF GREENHOUSES FROM THE EXHAUST GAS OF A BIOMASS HEATING SYSTEM
CO2 enrichment of greenhouses has been well proven to improve crop production whether it occurs from liquid CO2 or combustion of fossil fuels. The main objective of this research is to demonstrate
Carbohydrate Level and Growth of Tomato Plants
To what extent can the influence ofenvironment on greenhouse tomato plants (Lycopersicoe escukxtwm L.) be explained by a linear response of the growth rate to carbohydrate level? To answer this

To what extent can the influence ofenvironment on greenhouse tomato plants (Lycopersicoe escukxtwm L.) be explained by a linear response of the growth rate to carbohydrate level? To answer this
Biomass gasification for carbon dioxide enrichment in greenhouses
Biomass heating is used more and more by the greenhouse industry to reduce costs and the environmental footprint of production. The objective of this research project was to investigate the
Ground Based Study on Culturing Garlic as a Source of Vegetable Food and Medicine in Space - Growth and Ajoene Accumulation in Garlic Plants Cultured with Different CO 2 Regimes
TLDR
It is shown that elevated CO2 can increase ajoene accumulation as well as biomass production and water-use efficiency in garlic plants and that the cultivation of fresh vegetables enriched in phytomedicine is an alternative option for keeping crews’ health and recycling of CO2 in a closed environment.

CARBON DIOXIDE IN RELATION TO GLASSHOUSE CROPS.: AN ANALYSIS OF THE RESPONSE OF THE TOMATO CROP TO AN ATMOSPHERE ENRICHED WITH CARBON DIOXIDE
TLDR
In the case of tomatoes grown in enriched atmospheres, the cultivation of two crops, planted January and June respectively, was not profitable under the experimental conditions, and the stove method of treatment is discussed in relation to commercial practice.
Threshold Value of Carbon Dioxide Concentration in Photosynthesis of Foliage Leaves
TLDR
It is concluded that the carbon dioxide concentration of the atmosphere (mean value 0.030 vol. per cent) could be lowered only very slightly by the photosynthetic activity of leaves.
Methods for Controlling the Environment of Greenhouse Plants
TLDR
Methods are described for the partial regulation of the gas, temperature, humidity, and light environment of greenhouse plants, which include meteorological observations, estimation of CO2, and determination of ultraviolet light.
Photosynthesis in the Potato Under Field Conditions.
TLDR
The study reported here was planned to measure the effects of physiological and environmental factors on photosynthesis in the potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) under dry-land and irrigation conditions in western Nebraska.

THE EFFECT ON THE TOMATO PLANT OF CARBON DIOXIDE PRODUCED BY COMBUSTION
TLDR
A significant increase in the growth-rate of tomato seedlings was brought about by the treatment of carbon dioxide, and the economic bearing of the results is briefly discussed.
