Early in the 17th century Jean-Baptiste van Helmont, a citizen of Brussels, conducted a classical experiment (99). A 5 pound willow tree was planted in a container with 200 pounds of oven-dried soil. Water was added as needed. After 5 years the tree had increased to 169 pounds, 3 ounces, but the soil itself still weighed 199 pounds and 14 ounces.
