Carbon storage and component for the tree layer and undergrowth were compared between two 26-year-old plantations of broad-leaved species,Phobe bournei, and conifer species,Cunninghamia lanceolata(Chinese Fir),in Youxi, Fujian Province. The results showed carbon storage of tree layer was 61.7 t·hm-2 for Phobe bournei, which was lower than that of Cunninghamia lanceolata(72.7 t·hm-2);but the carbon storage of undergrowth was 1.5 t·hm-2 for Phobe bournei, which was higher than that of Cunninghamia…

It is shown how it is possible to increase and sustain carbon stored in subtropical forest plantations if management is switched towards more sustainable forestry and this C increase can be sustained in the long term through the maintenance of higher amounts of soil organic carbon and the production of timber products with longer life spans.
