Pneumocystis carinii continues to cause severe pneumonia in immunocompromised patients. Surfactant protein D (SP-D), a lung collectin, markedly accumulates during P. carinii pneumonia and binds to glycoprotein A (gpA) on the surface of P. carinii, thereby enhancing interactions with alveolar macrophages.
