The pharmacologic and biochemical features of cannabinoids make them candidates for antiseizure medications. At this time, anecdotes have outstripped controlled clinical trials as sources of support for their clinical value.

Cannabidiol for treating drug‐resistant epilepsy in children: the New South Wales experience
Objective: To evaluate the tolerability and safety of cannabidiol for treating drug‐resistant epilepsy in children, and to describe adverse events associated with such treatment.

TLDR
The clinical utility of CBD in the treatment of refractory epilepsy is described and the mechanisms underlying the seizure protection efficacy claims of CBD remain unclear.
Duration of use of oral cannabis extract in a cohort of pediatric epilepsy patients
TLDR
The duration of use of OCEs is evaluated as a measure of perceived benefit in a cohort of patients with pediatric epilepsy to demonstrate clear efficacy.
Efficacy of cannabinoids in pharmacoresistant epilepsy: A narrative review of the literature
TLDR
This narrative review, based on 42 references retrieved from Scopus and Medline, discusses the scientific data from human and animal studies regarding the efficacy of cannabis-based treatment for epilepsy.
Antiseizure effects of the cannabinoids in the amygdala‐kindling model
TLDR
CBD and THC both have antiseizure properties in the amygdala-kindling model, although THC produces suppression of the amygdala focus only at doses that produce hypolocomotion, and the addition of small amounts of THC greatly improves the effectiveness of CBD.
An interaction between warfarin and cannabidiol, a case report
Cannabis Drug Interactions
TLDR
This chapter will provide an overview of the routes of administration as well as highlight potential drug interactions that cannabis products may have with particular classes of pharmaceuticals.
Cannabidiol as a new treatment for drug‐resistant epilepsy in tuberous sclerosis complex
TLDR
CBD, a nonpsychoactive compound derived from the marijuana plant, is evaluated as an adjunct to current antiepileptic drugs in patients with refractory seizures in the setting of TSC.
Cannabidiol in the Treatment of Epilepsy: A Focused Review of Evidence and Gaps
TLDR
The most striking gaps in knowledge are the efficacy and optimal dose of CBD for adults with focal epilepsies, the long-term safety of CBD use, and strategies to improve access to CBD for people living with epilepsy.

Toward drugs derived from cannabis
TLDR
Cannabidiol is being tried in the clinic against epilepsy and as a hypnotic, and numerous synthetic cannabinoids are currently being investigated as analgetics and as sedative-relaxants.
Cannabidivarin‐rich cannabis extracts are anticonvulsant in mouse and rat via a CB1 receptor‐independent mechanism
TLDR
This work investigates the anticonvulsant profiles of cannabis‐derived botanical drug substances (BDSs) rich in Cannabidivarin and containing cannabidiol (CBD) in acute in vivo seizure models and the binding of CBDV BDSs and their components at cannabinoid CB1 receptors.
Cannabis and other illicit drug use in epilepsy patients
This study aimed to assess the prevalence of illicit drug use among epilepsy patients and its effects on the disease.
Anticonvulsant nature of marihuana smoking.
Marihuana smoking, in conjunction with therapeutic doses of phenobarbital and diphenylhydantoin, was apparently necessary for controlling seizures in one 24-year-old epileptic patient.
Effects of cannabinoids and cannabinoid‐enriched Cannabis extracts on TRP channels and endocannabinoid metabolic enzymes
TLDR
CBD and Δ9‐tetrahydrocannabinol interact with transient receptor potential (TRP) channels and enzymes of the endocannabinoid system to explore its role in Cannabidiol-like properties.
Fewer specialists support using medical marijuana and CBD in treating epilepsy patients compared with other medical professionals and patients: Result of Epilepsia's survey
From May 20 to September 1 2014, Epilepsia conducted an online survey seeking opinions about the use of medical marijuana and cannabidiol (CBD) for people with epilepsy. This study reports the
Marijuana: an effective antiepileptic treatment in partial epilepsy? A case report and review of the literature.
TLDR
The case of a 45-year-old man with cerebral palsy and epilepsy who showed marked improvement with the use of marijuana is presented, supporting other anecdotal data suggesting that marijuana use may be a beneficial adjunctive treatment in some patients with epilepsy.
Cerebrospinal fluid levels of the endocannabinoid anandamide are reduced in patients with untreated newly diagnosed temporal lobe epilepsy
TLDR
The objective of this study was to measure endocannabinoids levels in the cerebrospinal fluid of drug‐naive patients affected by temporal lobe epilepsy, and demonstrate that theendocannabinoid anandamide can antagonize epileptic discharges in hippocampal tissue.
Marihuana Use Among Epileptics
TLDR
Marihuana use may activate some types of epilepsies and also could affect the course of drug therapy, and a survey of illegal drug use among epileptics found that cannabinoids can interact with barbiturates, which are commonly used as anticonvulsants.
