There are many millions of dogs worldwide, and these dogs have many different functions. The most obvious use is providing companionship, but there are also many working dogs, including guide dogs for the blind, hearing dogs, guard dogs and farm dogs, to mention a few. The health and welfare of these dogs is of great concern to dog owners, dog breeders and to those who use dogs in their work. Dogs spontaneously develop many diseases that are very similar to their human counterparts. Dogs may…

DLA Class II Alleles and Haplotypes Are Associated with Risk for and Protection from Chronic Hepatitis in the English Springer Spaniel
TLDR
It is demonstrated that DLA class II is significantly associated with risk and protection from developing CH in ESSs.
MHC class II risk haplotype associated with canine chronic superficial keratitis in German Shepherd dogs.
Association of a dog leukocyte antigen class II haplotype with hypoadrenocorticism in Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers.
TLDR
A limited MHC diversity in North American NSDTRs is indicated and it is suggested that the MHC may play a role in the development of hypoadrenocorticism in the N SDTR, supporting the autoimmune origin of the disease.
Discovery of a Novel Pathway for an SLE-related Disease Complex in the Canine Breed Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
TLDR
This thesis describes the first successful mapping of a complex trait in the dog and shows that MHC class II together with two other identified genetic risk factors contribute to development of systemic autoimmune disease.
Genetic diversity and population structure of African village dogs based on microsatellite and immunity-related molecular markers
TLDR
It seems that the genetic structure of this particular population of Kenyan village dogs is mostly determined by geographical and anthropogenic factors influencing the gene flow between various subpopulations rather than by biological factors, such as genetic contribution of original migrating populations and/or the pathogen-mediated selection.
Allelic Combinations of Promoter and Exon 2 in DQB1 in Dogs and Wolves
TLDR
Ewens-Watterson tests indicated that both the promoter and exon 2 are under the balancing selection, and both regions appear to be more recently derived in the dog than in the wolf, suggesting altered selection pressure on patterns of expression.
Investigating the genetic basis of cranial cruciate ligament rupture in the Newfoundland dog
TLDR
The work has contributed to the understanding of causative factors involved in CCL rupture susceptibility and may be an important step in the development of a screening test to reduce the incidence of CCL ruptures in dogs and thus improve their health and welfare.
Evolutionary history of DLA class II haplotypes in canine diabetes mellitus through single nucleotide polymorphism genotyping.
TLDR
This study provides preliminary tools for dog leukocyte antigen (DLA) class II haplotype analysis with 102 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) identified and analysis of SNP patterns indicated combinations of exon 2 alleles have arisen through both recombination and convergence.

Study of 253 dogs in the United Kingdom with diabetes mellitus
TLDR
The disease was diagnosed more commonly in the winter months, a seasonal pattern also observed in human beings with diabetes, suggesting that similar environmental factors might be involved in the disease.
Association of hypothyroid disease in Doberman Pinscher dogs with a rare major histocompatibility complex DLA class II haplotype.
TLDR
Three dog-leucocyte antigen (DLA) genes, DLA-DRB1, DQA1 and DQB1, were characterized by sequence-based typing and assigned to haplotypes for each dog and one rare haplotype was found at an increased frequency in the affected dogs compared to the unaffected dogs.

Immunologic investigations of naturally occurring canine thyroiditis.
TLDR
Overall evidence from present and past studies suggested that the development of the canine disorder is similar in many respects to human thyroiditis.
Dog MHC alleles containing the human RA shared epitope confer susceptibility to canine rheumatoid arthritis
TLDR
It is suggested that a conserved amino acid motif in the 3HVR present in some DRB1 alleles of both dogs and humans is associated with rheumatoid arthritis in both species.
Association of a common dog leucocyte antigen class II haplotype with canine primary immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia.
TLDR
It was apparent that different breeds had different MHC associations with canine IMHA, which is similar to the observation that different human ethnic groups can have different HLA associations with the same immune-mediated disease.
Dog thyroiditis: occurrence and similarity to Hashimoto's struma.
TLDR
Histologically proved thyroiditis indistinguishable from human Hashimoto’s struma was found to occur in 12.5 % of 541 males and 10.9% of 440 females in a purebred beagle colony started in 1958, and the use of stud “I” more than doubled the prevalence.
Association of canine hypothyroidism with a common major histocompatibility complex DLA class II allele.
TLDR
A further series of 173 hypothyroid dogs in a range of breeds where a significant association with DLA-DQA1*00101 is shown are reported.
Prevalence of serum thyroid hormone autoantibodies in dogs with clinical signs of hypothyroidism.
TLDR
Thyroid hormone autoantibodies may falsely increase measured triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine(T4) concentrations in dogs; results suggest that T3 concentration may be falsely increased in approximately 57 of 1,000 dogs with hypothyroidism and that T4 concentration may been falsely increasedIn dogs.
HLA Associations with Hashimoto's thyroiditis
TLDR
These results do not support a difference between goitrous and atrophic thyroiditis based on respective associations with HLA‐DR5 and DR3, but confirm a recent study in which Hla‐DR3 was associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
