Background: Stigma refers to a distinctive, discrediting characteristic, rendering its bearer tainted or inferior by others. Definitions of stigma acknowledge the recognition of difference; and devaluation. Evidence, largely from high-income countries suggests that cancer is a stigmatized disease.
