The standard ΛCDM model provides an excellent fit to current cosmological observations but suffers from a potentially serious Boltzmann Brain problem. If the universe enters a de Sitter vacuum phase that is truly eternal, there will be a finite temperature in empty space and corresponding thermal fluctuations. Among these fluctuations will be intelligent observers, as well as configurations that reproduce any local region of the current universe to arbitrary precision. We discuss the…

De Sitter Space Without Dynamical Quantum Fluctuations

We argue that, under certain plausible assumptions, de Sitter space settles into a quiescent vacuum in which there are no dynamical quantum fluctuations. Such fluctuations require either an evolving

Some modern cosmological models predict the appearance of Boltzmann Brains: observers who randomly fluctuate out of a thermal bath rather than naturally evolving from a low-entropy Big Bang. A

Spacetime Average Density (SAD) cosmological measures

The measure problem of cosmology is how to obtain normalized probabilities of observations from the quantum state of the universe. This is particularly a problem when eternal inflation leads to a

De Sitter Space Without Quantum Fluctuations

We argue that, under certain plausible assumptions, de Sitter space settles into a quiescent vacuum in which there are no quantum fluctuations. Quantum fluctuations require time-dependent histories

Constraints on Cosmology and Quantum Gravity from Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Field Theory

Typical cosmological states have structure, obey to very good approximation the laws of classical physics on large scales, and are far from equilibrium. Typical quantum-mechanical states have none of

When a physicist says that a theory is fine-tuned, they mean that it must make a suspiciously precise assumption in order to explain a certain observation. This is evidence that the theory is

Observations of wavefunction collapse and the retrospective application of the Born rule.

In this paper I present a thought experiment that gives different results depending on whether or not the wavefunction collapses. Since the wavefunction does not obey the Schrodinger equation during

A-symmetric confirmation and anthropic skepticism

In recent years, anthropic reasoning has been used to justify a number of controversial skeptical hypotheses (both scientific and philosophical). In this paper, we consider two prominent examples,

Cosmological Consequences of Dark Matter Interactions and Vacuum Fluctuations

This thesis is divided into two parts: interacting dark matter and fluctuations in cosmology. There is an incongruence between the properties that dark matter is expected to possess between the early

Time and Chance

Summary Vert general considerations indicate that a revision of classical conceptions of time is necessary. The view is suggested that time is a statistical conception; that while individual
