We consider the spectrum of the Laplacian in a bounded open domain of ℝn with a rough boundary (i.e. with possibly non-integer dimension) and we discuss a conjecture by M. V. Berry generalizing Weyl's conjecture. Then using ideas Mark Kac developed in his famous study of the drum, we give upper and lower bounds for the second term of the expansion of the partition function. The main thesis of the paper is to show that the relevant measure of the roughness of the boundary should be based on… Expand

Can One Hear the Shape of a Fractal Drum? Partial Resolution of the Weyl-Berry Conjecture
Several years ago, motivated in part by the challenging problem of studying the scattering of light from “fractal” surfaces, the physicist Michael V. Berry formulated a very intriguing conjectureExpand
Fractal drums and then-dimensional modified Weyl-Berry conjecture
In this paper, we study the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian in a bounded (or, more generally, of finite volume) open set Ω∈Rn (n≧1) with fractal boundary ∂Ω of interior Minkowski dimensionExpand
An example of a two-term asymptotics for the “counting function” of a fractal drum
In this paper we study the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian in a bounded domain Ω ⊂ R n with fractal boundary ∂Ω. We construct an open set Q for which we can effectively compute the second term ofExpand
Eigenvalues of the Laplacian on domains with fractal boundary
Consider the Laplacian operator on a bounded open domain in Euclidean space with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We show that for each number D with 1 < D < 2, there are two bounded open domains in RExpand
Fractal drum, inverse spectral problems for elliptic operators and a partial resolution of the Weyl-Berry conjecture
Let Í2 be a bounded open set of E" (n > 1) with "fractal" boundary T . We extend Hermann Weyl's classical theorem by establishing a precise remainder estimate for the asymptotics of the eigenvaluesExpand
The Sound of Fractal Strings and the Riemann Hypothesis
We give an overview of the intimate connections between natural direct and inverse spectral problems for fractal strings, on the one hand, and the Riemann zeta function and the Riemann hypothesis, onExpand
The hyperbolic geometry and spectrum of irregular domains
The authors obtain upper and lower bounds on the bottom of the spectrum and essential spectrum for a region Omega contained in RN which is provided with a hyperbolic-type conformal metric. TheirExpand
The Riemann Zeta-Function and the One-Dimensional Weyl-Berry Conjecture for Fractal Drums
Based on his earlier work on the vibrations of 'drums with fractal boundary', the first author has refined M. V. Berry's conjecture that extended from the 'smooth' to the 'fractal' case H. Weyl'sExpand
Weyl's problem for the spectral distribution of Laplacians on P.C.F. self-similar fractals
We establish an analogue of Weyl's classical theorem for the asymptotics of eigenvalues of Laplacians on a finitely ramified (i.e., p.c.f.) self-similar fractalK, such as, for example, the SierpinskiExpand
On spectral asymptotics for domains with fractal boundaries
We discuss the spectral properties of the Laplacian for domains Ω with fractal boundaries. The main goal of the article is to find the second term of spectral asymptotics of the counting functionN(λ)Expand
