A rationale is described for the calibration of non-linear runoff routing models prior to use of these models in the derivation of design flood hydrographs. The procedure pivots on the intersection property shown by peak flow parameter indifference curves derived from calibration of the models against different magnitudes of floods. The limitations of the procedure are explored. The need to conduct sensitivity analysis in all cases is demonstrated.
