The ionic basis of the action potential was investigated using intracellular microelectrodes in single smooth muscle cells freshly isolated from the stomach of the toad Bufo marinus. When [Ca2+]0 was elevated (> 8mM), action potentials were readily elicited, which had similar characteristics to those found in many tissue preparations of visceral smooth muscle.
