The naturally occurring hormone calcitonin is a valued component of therapeutic programs currently available for osteoporosis. Calcitonin inhibits osteoclast-mediated bone resorption by decreasing osteoclast function, and possibly by reducing the osteoclast population through diminishing the differentiation of osteoclast progenitor cells. Whether calcitonin deficiency, or deficiency of calcitonin secretory reserve, contributes to the etiology of postmenopausal osteoporosis is currently unclear… CONTINUE READING
