  • The behavioral stimulant effects of xanthines, such as caffeine and theophylline, appear to involve blockade of central adenosine receptors. However, 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX), a potent phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitor, produces behavioral depression.
