The relation between CaM kinase II activity and high Ca2+-mediated stress responses was studied in cultured vascular smooth muscle cells. Treatment with ionomycin (1 μM) for 5 min caused a significant loss of CaM kinase II activity in whole cell homegenates and prominent vesiculation of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER).
