The test and evaluation of two W-beam guardrail terminal systems are described. The two terminals, though quite similar, are characterized by a 4.0-ft (1.5-m) flare offset and a 1.5-ft (0.5-m) flare offset. Both designs were subjected to the four-test terminal matrix of NCHRP Report 230 with the 1,800-lb minicar and successful results are reported. The basis for the terminal designs is the breakaway cable terminal (BCT) that has been used in this country for more than 10 years. Improvements to…

Figures and Tables from this paper

Development of Metal-Cutting Guardrail Terminal
A crashworthy terminal for strong-post W-beam guardrail systems was developed at the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility at the University of Nebraska—Lincoln. The terminal incorporates an impact head
DEVELOPMENT OF A SLOTTED-RAIL BREAKAWAY CABLE TERMINAL
Development of the slotted-Rail Breakaway Cable Terminal (SRBCT), a low-cost end treatment for W-beam guardrails, is presented in this paper. Longitudinal slots in guardrail segments are used to
Dynamic strength of a modified W-beam BCT trailing-end termination system
W-beam systems utilise end-terminal anchorages to develop tension upstream and downstream of an impact event. However, the capacities of the anchorage components under impact loading are not well
Crash Testing and Evaluation of Tennessee Bridge Rail and Guardrail Designs - Phase I Volume II
The objective of this study was to analyze and evaluate the impact performance of various bridge rail, guarurail, transition, anu enu treatment uesigns currcntly in use by the Tennessee Department of
BOX-BEAM GUARDRAIL TERMINAL
A crashworthy terminal for box-beam guardrails was developed and successfully crash tested. The terminal incorporated a telescoping tube configuration with a 7-in. x 7-in. x 1/8-in. (178-mm x 178-mm
Development, Crash Testing, and Evaluation of Steel-Post Trailing-End Guardrail Anchorage System
TLDR
Recommendations are provided for the installation of a steel-post trailing-end guardrail anchorage system when used in combination with MGS.

ANALYSIS OF ACCIDENTS INVOLVING BREAKAWAY-CABLE-TERMINAL END TREATMENTS. FINAL REPORT
TLDR
Results showed that the breakaway-cable-terminal end treatment performed properly in most accidents, and a recommendation was made to remove any existing MBCT designs from gore area locations and replace them with a crash cushion.
BREAKAWAY CABLE TERMINAL EVALUATION
EVALUATIONS OF GUARDRAIL BREAKAWAY CABLE TERMINALS
Currently recommended guardrail and median barrier breakaway cable terminals (BCT) were to be evaluated for performance with 1800-lb (800-kg) class minicars. Early findings indicated unsatisfactory
