COPD exacerbations are a major source of COPD morbidity, mortality and cost. Exacerbations tend to become more frequent as COPD progresses with the cause assumed to be infectious in about 80% of patients. The mainstay of management is inhaled bronchodilators with judicious use of oxygen, antibiotics, corticosteroids and assisted ventilation.
