CONSTRAINTS ON MACHO DARK MATTER FROM COMPACT STELLAR SYSTEMS IN ULTRA-FAINT DWARF GALAXIES
@article{Brandt2016CONSTRAINTSOM, title={CONSTRAINTS ON MACHO DARK MATTER FROM COMPACT STELLAR SYSTEMS IN ULTRA-FAINT DWARF GALAXIES}, author={Timothy D. Brandt}, journal={The Astrophysical Journal Letters}, year={2016}, volume={824} }
I show that a recently discovered star cluster near the center of the ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Eridanus II provides strong constraints on massive compact halo objects (MACHOs) of ≳5 M⊙ as the main component of dark matter. MACHO dark matter will dynamically heat the cluster, driving it to larger sizes and higher velocity dispersions until it dissolves into its host galaxy. The stars in compact ultra-faint dwarf galaxies themselves will be subject to the same dynamical heating; the survival of…

Improved constraints from ultra-faint dwarf galaxies on primordial black holes as dark matter
- PhysicsMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society
- 2020
Soon after the recent first ever detection of gravitational waves from merging black holes it has been suggested that their origin is primordial. Appealingly, a sufficient number of primordial…

Aims. It has been shown that the ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Eridanus 2 may host a stellar cluster in its centre. If this cluster is shown to exist, it can be used to set constraints on the mass and…
Primordial black holes as dark matter: constraints from compact ultra-faint dwarfs

The ground-breaking detections of gravitational waves from black hole mergers by LIGO have rekindled interest in primordial black holes (PBHs) and the possibility of dark matter being composed of…
Limits on the Mass and Abundance of Primordial Black Holes from Quasar Gravitational Microlensing
- Physics, Geology
- 2017
The idea that dark matter can be made of intermediate-mass primordial black holes (PBHs) in the 10 M⊙ ≲ M ≲ 200 M⊙ range has recently been reconsidered, particularly in the light of the detection of…
Limits on Stellar-Mass Compact Objects as Dark Matter from Gravitational Lensing of Type Ia Supernovae.

Borders on the abundance of compact objects from gravitational lensing of type Ia supernovae (SNe) constrain early-Universe models that predict stellar-mass PBH production and strengthen the case for lighter forms of DM, including new elementary particles.
Massive Primordial Black Holes as Dark Matter and their detection with Gravitational Waves
- Physics

Massive Primordial Black Holes (MPBH) can be formed after inflation due to broad peaks in the primordial curvature power spectrum that collapse gravitationally during the radiation era, to form…
The Cusp–Core Problem in Gas-Poor Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies
- PhysicsGalaxies
- 2021
This review deals with the inconsistency of inner dark matter density profiles in dwarf galaxies, known as the cusp–core problem. In particular, we aim to focus on gas-poor dwarf galaxies. One of the…
Red-Giant Branch Stellar Cores as Macroscopic Dark Matter Detectors

We show that macroscopic dark matter (DM) impacts on the degenerate helium cores of redgiant branch (RGB) stars can ignite helium fusion via DM-baryon elastic scattering. The onset of helium burning…

We investigate the in-spiralling time-scales of globular clusters (GCs) in dwarf spheroidal (dSph) and dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies, due to dynamical friction (DF). We address the problem of these…
Does the Fornax dwarf spheroidal have a central cusp or core
- Physics

ABSTRACT The dark matter dominated Fornax dwarf spheroidal has five globular clusters orbitingat ∼ 1kpc from its centre. In a cuspy CDM halo the globulars would sink to thecentre from their current…

Did LIGO Detect Dark Matter?
- PhysicsPhysical review letters
- 2016
It is considered that the black-hole (BH) binary detected by LIGO may be a signature of dark matter, and reasonable estimates span a range that overlaps the 2-53 Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1} rate estimated from GW150914, thus raising the possibility that LigO has detected PBH dark matter.
