This article reports the first single-blind study using psychotropic analgesic nitrous oxide (PAN) for treating acute withdrawal states following the abuse of methaqualone combined and smoked with cannabis. Smoked methaqualone combined with cannabis is called “white pipe” (WP). South Africa is the only country in the world where WP is a major form of substance abuse. This article demonstrates in 101 consecutively treated patients given placebo (100% oxygen) followed by PAN that this therapy…
Marijuana, Nitrous Oxide, and Other Inhaled Drugs
Inhalation of many substances has been part of civilization for thousands of years, for both pleasure and medicinal reasons. Abuse of this practice has become indigenous to our society. While tobacco
Acute neurotoxicity associated with recreational use of methylmethaqualone confirmed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry
TLDR
Based on the chemical structure and animal data, and according to this case report and users’ Web reports, methylmethaqualone appears to have a similar acute toxicity profile to methaqualone, with marked psychomotor stimulation.
TECHNIQUE FOR THE ADMINISTRATION OF NITROUS OXIDE/OXYGEN SEDATION TO ENSURE PSYCHOTROPIC ANALGESIC NITROUS OXIDE (PAN) EFFECTS
This past year the 160th anniversary of the discovery of nitrous oxide as an analgesic/psychotropic anesthetic by an American dentist, Horace Wells, was celebrated in Hartford, Connecticut, USA. This
Pharmacotherapies for cannabis dependence.
TLDR
There was some evidence that treatment with preparations containing THC was associated with reduced cannabis withdrawal symptoms and craving, but this latter outcome could not be quantified and the utility of most of the medications to promote cannabis abstinence at the end of treatment was insufficient.
Pharmacotherapies for cannabis dependence.
TLDR
There was no difference in the likelihood of withdrawal from treatment due to adverse effects with THC preparations, SSRIs antidepressants, mixed action antidepressants, anticonvulsants and mood stabilisers, buspirone and N-acetylcysteine compared to placebo (low- to very low-quality evidence), and abstinence at end of treatment was no more likely than with placebo.
Sedative‐Hypnotic Agents That Impact Gamma‐Aminobutyric Acid Receptors: Focus on Flunitrazepam, Gamma‐Hydroxybutyric Acid, Phenibut, and Selank
TLDR
There are many nonopioid central nervous system depressant substances that share a gamma‐aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor–related mechanism of action that are used to treat anxiety, seizures, depression, and insomnia but are also used as substances of abuse and used to facilitate sexual assault.

TLDR
The role of other non- opioid systems, and the extent to which they contribute to the psy-chotropic properties of N2O, still remains to be established.
Nitrous Oxide Inhalation Among Adolescents: Prevalence, Correlates, and Co-Occurrence with Volatile Solvent Inhalation
TLDR
Screening and interventions for NO and VS inhalant use should be implemented in juvenile justice facilities and psychiatric disorders, polydrug use, and temperamental fearlessness were correlates of NO use.
Suffocation caused by plastic wrap covering the face combined with nitrous oxide inhalation
TLDR
This is the first report of suicide by suffocation by external obstruction combined with nitrous oxide inhalation in a 17-year old man, suspected because of a history of depression for several months.

Randomized double-blind trial of psychotropic analgesic nitrous oxide compared with diazepam for alcohol withdrawal state.
TLDR
The first randomized double-blind controlled study of the use of psychotropic analgesic nitrous oxide vs. a single dose of benzodiazepine (diazepam) for treating acute alcoholic withdrawal states shows PAN is a safe, rapid and effective therapy for acute mild to moderately severe withdrawal states.
Psychotropic analgesic nitrous oxide prevents craving after withdrawal for alcohol, cannabis and tobacco.
TLDR
The results show that PAN, effectively eliminates or reduces craving in both cohorts in 98% of cases reporting craving, and confirm the usefulness of PAN as an investigative, diagnostic and therapeutic tool of the endogenous opioid system in man.
Psychotropic analgesic nitrous oxide for treating alcohol withdrawal in an outpatient setting.
TLDR
Evidence is presented that psychotropic analgesic nitrous oxide (PAN) can be used safely and successfully as an out-patient treatment for the AWS in the vast majority of cases and the requirements for addictive sedative medications is also dramatically reduced, greatly diminishing the dangers of secondary addiction.
Placebo and analgesic nitrous oxide for treatment of the alcohol withdrawal state.
TLDR
There is evidence that analgesic nitrous oxide is superior to placebo in the treatment of the alcohol withdrawal state and this therapy provides a rapid method of screening those patients requiring intensive monitoring and treatment in hospital from those who might benefit from out-patient therapy alone.
Analgesic nitrous oxide for alcohol withdrawal: a critical appraisal after 10 years' use.
We describe a method of treating the mild to moderate alcohol withdrawal state which has been used successfully for 10 years in over 7,000 cases. It is now the standard therapy at the largest
Methaqualone abuse, the quiet epidemic.
TLDR
Experience in Europe and elsewhere indicates that the nonbarbiturate hypnotic, methaqualone, has a marked potential for producing dependence and causes a severe withdrawal syndrome.
The treatment of alcoholic withdrawal states with oxygen and nitrous oxide.
TLDR
In most cases oxygen alone reversed withdrawal symptoms except, in a few instances, depression, but the residual depressive symptoms not reversed by oxygen were completely reversed by nitrous oxide/oxygen.
Analgesic nitrous oxide for alcohol withdrawal is better than placebo.
TLDR
Data distinguishing the placebo response from the action of analgesic nitrous oxide in alcohol withdrawal is presented and the role of the postulated hyperalgesic opioid system in the negative placebo response is mentioned.
Clinical role and mechanisms of action of analgesic nitrous oxide.
TLDR
Its uniqueness among the opioids arises from its ability to safely stimulate both mu and kappa opioid receptors thereby modulating these systems, which are at times antagonistic to each other and appear to be particularly important during addictive withdrawal.
