We present theoretical analysis on why and how rechargeable metal–air type batteries can be made significantly safer and more practical by utilizing CO2/oxalate conversions instead of O2/peroxide or O2/hydroxide ones, in the positive electrode. Metal–air batteries, such as the Li–air one, may have very large energy densities, comparable to that of gasoline, theoretically allowing for long range all-electric vehicles. There are, however, still significant challenges, especially related to the… Expand

Investigation of the O2 electrochemistry in a polymer electrolyte solid-state cell.
TLDR
Herein the authors depart totally from this conventional approach by moving to a solid-state cell using a poly(ethylene oxide)–lithium triflate (PEOLiCF3SO3) solvent-free polymer electrolyte, to assure a cell structure in which reactions of the products of the electrochemical process (and, particularly, of the singlet oxygen) with electrolyte could be totally avoided. Electrocatalytic CO2 Conversion to Oxalate by a Copper Complex
TLDR
A dinuclear Copper(I) complex that is oxidized in air by CO2 rather than O2 is described; the product is a tetranuclear copper(II) complex containing two bridging CO2-derived oxalate groups, which can be nearly quantitatively electrochemically reduced at a relatively accessible potential, regenerating the initial dinuclear copper (I) compound.
