Viral infections, including cytomegalovirus (CMV), abrogate transplantation tolerance in animal models. Whether this also occurs in humans remains elusive. We investigated how CMV affects T cells and rejection episodes after liver transplantation (LT). Phenotype and alloreactivity of peripheral and allograft‐infiltrating T cells from LT patients with different CMV status were analyzed by flow cytometry. The association of CMV status with early and late acute rejection was retrospectively…

Current Tolerance-Associated Peripheral Blood Gene Expression Profiles After Liver Transplantation Are Influenced by Immunosuppressive Drugs and Prior Cytomegalovirus Infection
- Biology, MedicineFrontiers in Immunology
- 2021
It is suggested that use of IS profoundly affects gene expression in peripheral blood, and that these genes are not associated with operational tolerance, and expression levels of SLAMF7 and NKG7 were affected by prior cytomegalovirus infection in LTx recipients.
The CD8 T-cell response during tolerance induction in liver transplantation

This work discusses how alloreactive cytotoxic T‐cell responses are generated against allografts, before reviewing how the liver parenchyma, donor passenger leucocytes and the host immune system function together to attenuate allore active CD8 T‐ cell responses to promote the long‐term survival of liver transplants.
