SOLUTIONS PRESENTED BY HOUSNER AND CASTELLANI REPRESENT A BETTER SOLUTION TO THE IDEALIZED PROBLEM THAN DOES THE SOLUTION BY SUNG FOR VERTICAL MOTION OF A CIRCULAR FOOTING ON THE SURFACE OF THE ELASTIC HALF SPACE. THE USE OF THE WEIGHTED AVERAGE DISPLACEMENT IS TO BE PREFERRED OVER USE OF THE AVERAGE DISPLACEMENT AND EITHER OF THESE IS MORE REALISTIC THAN SUNG'S METHOD OF CONSIDERING THAT THE ENTIRE FOOTING UNDERGOES THE SAME DISPLACEMENT AS THE CENTER OF THE LOADED AREA.
