A primary Ca 2+-translocating protein is the Ca 2+-ATPase that transports Ca 2+ against its electrochemical gradient using free energy from the hydrolysis of ATP. Ca 2+ ‘pumps’ are located on the intracellular membranes of the sarcoor endoplasmic reticulum ( Sarco/Endoplasmic Reticulum Ca2+ATPase, SERCA) and on the plasma membrane ( Plasma Membrane Ca2+-ATPase, PMCA).
