The family of epithelio-mesenchymal systems consists of a variety of related forms. Common to all is the formation of epithelial-bounding membranes. These may be external to the mesenchyme as in skin, or internal to the mesenchyme as in ducted glands. We show how the formation of epithelial-bounding membranes can be accounted for in terms of the contact interactions between the cells.
