Preterm birth (delivery before 37 weeks and 0/7 days of gestation) is a leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality in the United States. In 2013, 11.4% of the nearly 4 million U.S. live births were preterm; however, 36% of the 8,470 infant deaths were attributed to preterm birth (1). Infants born at earlier gestational ages, especially <32 0/7 weeks, have the highest mortality (Figure) and morbidity rates. Morbidity associated with preterm birth includes respiratory distress syndrome…
Born Preterm: A Public Health Issue
TLDR
This paper focuses on the long-term consequences of preterm birth and possible public health measures to tackle them, and addresses social determinants of health can have the highest impact on prematurity outcomes.
Pre-pregnancy cardiovascular risk factors and racial disparities in birth outcomes: the Bogalusa Heart Study
TLDR
This analysis does not provide evidence for preconception cardiovascular risk being a strong contributor to racial disparities in birth outcomes, and clear racial disparities were found.
Applying Precision Public Health to Prevent Preterm Birth
Preterm birth (PTB) is one of the major health-care challenges of our time. Being born too early is associated with major risks to the child with potential for serious consequences in terms of
Preterm birth and risk of chronic kidney disease from childhood into mid-adulthood: national cohort study
TLDR
Preterm and early term birth are strong risk factors for the development of CKD from childhood into mid-adulthood and people born prematurely need long term follow-up for monitoring and preventive actions to preserve renal function across the life course.
Effects of Maternal Age and Age-Specific Preterm Birth Rates on Overall Preterm Birth Rates - United States, 2007 and 2014.
TLDR
The decline in preterm births from 2007 to 2014 is related, in part, to teen pregnancy prevention and the changing maternal age distribution and effective public health strategies for further reducing preterm birth rates need to be tailored to different age groups.
Updates on an At-Risk Population: Late-Preterm and Early-Term Infants
TLDR
After nearly a decade of steady decreases in the LPT birth rate that largely contributed to the decline in total US preterm birth rates, the birth rate in LPT infants has been inching upward since 2015 and there is now an evolving concern.
Preventive Health Care Utilization Among Mother-infant Dyads With Medicaid Insurance in the Year Following Birth
TLDR
Maternal health risks were associated with increased adult preventive visits, but 38% of dyads had no adult preventive visit in the year following birth, compared with dyads without risk.
Public Health Implications of Very Preterm Birth.
Preterm birth: Risk factors, interventions for risk reduction, and maternal prognosis
TLDR
Complications of pregnancy can lead to both sPTB and provider-initiated PTBs, and rarely, cervical insufficiency results in spontaneous PTB.

Epidemiology and causes of preterm birth
Timing of indicated late-preterm and early-term birth.
TLDR
The goal of the workshop was to synthesize the available information regarding conditions that may result in medically indicated late-preterm and early-term births to determine the potential risks and benefits of delivery compared with continued pregnancy, determine the optimal gestational age for delivery of affected pregnancies when possible, and inform future research.
Enrollment in Early Intervention Programs Among Infants Born Late Preterm, Early Term, and Term
TLDR
Infants born late preterm and early term have higher prevalence of EI program services enrollment than infants born at term, and may benefit from more frequent monitoring for developmental delays or disabilities.
Infant mortality and low birth weight among black and white infants--United States, 1980-2000.
TLDR
Trends in mortality and birth weight among black and white infants are described, which indicate persistent black-white disparities and underscore the need for prevention strategies that reduce preterm delivery and specific medical conditions that lead to infant death.
Vital Signs: Repeat Births Among Teens — United States, 2007–2010
TLDR
Although the prevalence of repeat teen birth has declined in recent years, nearly one in five teen births is a repeat birth and large disparities exist in repeat teen births and use of the most effective contraceptive methods postpartum, which was reported by fewer than one out of four teen mothers.
Different corticosteroids and regimens for accelerating fetal lung maturation for women at risk of preterm birth.
TLDR
It remains unclear whether one corticosteroid (or one particular regimen) has advantages over another, and the suggestion that 12-hour dosing may be as effective as 24- hour dosing of betamethasone based on one small trial is suggested.
