The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) serves executive control functions and forms direct connections with subcortical areas such as the amygdala. Our previous work showed abnormal inhibition of mPFC pyramidal cells and hyperactivity of amygdala output neurons in an arthritis pain model.
