Calcium mediates the process of adaptation in sensory hair cells and influences the open probability of their mechano-electrical transducer channels. Since the stiffness of the hair cell bundles partly depends on the transducer channels’ open probability, variation in the concentration of extracellular calcium is expected to change the micro-mechanical properties of the hair cell bundles.
