Starting from the star formation rate (SFR) per unit area, , determined for damped Lyα systems (DLAs) using the C II* method, we obtain the SFR per unit comoving volume, (z), at z ≈ 3. Pure warm neutral medium (WNM) solutions are ruled out since they generate more bolometric background radiation than observed, but the two-phase solutions dominated by the cold neutral medium (CNM) are consistent with the backgrounds. We find that (z) for DLAs agrees with the (z) for the Lyman break galaxies…
C II* Absorption in Damped Lyα Systems. I. Star Formation Rates in a Two-Phase Medium
We describe a technique that for the first time measures star formation rates (SFRs) in damped Lyα systems (DLAs) directly. We assume that massive stars form in DLAs and that the far-ultraviolet
The star formation rate of Ca ii and damped Lyman α absorbers at 0.4 < z < 1.3
Using stacked Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra, we present the detection of (O II) λλ3727, 3730 nebular emission from the galaxies hosting Ca II absorption line systems and galaxies hosting Mg
Star Formation Efficiency in Neutral Gas at z=3
Applying the Kennicutt-Schmidt law to damped Ly? absorption systems (DLAs), we predict that 3% of the sky should be covered with extended objects brighter than ?V ? 28.4 mag arcsec-2, if DLAs at
Cold Neutral Gas in a z = 4.2 Damped Lyα System: Fuel for Star Formation
We discuss interstellar temperature determinations using the excitation equilibrium of the 2P levels of Si II and C II. We show how observations of the 2P3/2 fine-structure levels of Si II and C II
Metallicity and H I Column Density Properties of Damped Lyα Systems
On the basis of the disk galaxy formation theory within the framework of the standard U CDM hierarchical picture (Mo, Mao,& White), we selected modeled damped Lyα systems (DLAs), according to their
The Star Formation History of Damped Lyα Absorbers
The local power-law relationship between the surface densities of neutral hydrogen gas and star formation rate (SFR) can be used to explore the SFR properties of damped Lyα (DLA) systems at higher
STAR FORMATION FROM DLA GAS IN THE OUTSKIRTS OF LYMAN BREAK GALAXIES AT z ∼ 3
We present evidence for spatially extended low surface brightness emission around Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) in the V-band image of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, corresponding to the z {approx} 3
The VLT-UVES survey for molecular hydrogen in high-redshift damped Lyman α systems: physical conditions in the neutral gas
We study the physical conditions in damped Lyman α systems (DLAs), using a sample of 33 systems towards 26 quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) acquired for a recently completed survey of H2 by Ledoux,
A Kennicutt-Schmidt Law for Intervening Absorption Line Systems
We argue that most strong intervening metal absorption line systems, where the rest equivalent width of the Mg II λ2796 line is >0.5 A, are interstellar material in, and outflowing from, star-forming
Damped Lyα systems as probes of chemical evolution over cosmological timescales
Abstract We review the current state of knowledge of damped Lyα systems (DLAs) selected in absorption on quasar sightlines. These objects are extremely useful to study the interstellar medium of

Limits on the star formation rates of z>2 damped Lyα systems from Hα spectroscopy
We present the results of a long-slit K-band spectroscopic search for Hα emission from eight damped Lyα absorbers (DLAs) at z>2 with the goal of measuring the star formation rates in these systems.
Damped Lyα Absorber at High Redshift: Large Disks or Galactic Building Blocks?
We investigate the nature of the physical structures giving rise to damped Lyα absorption systems (DLAS) at high redshift. In particular, we examine the suggestion that rapidly rotating large disks
A deep search for 21-cm absorption in high redshift damped Lyman-alpha systems
We present deep GMRT 21-cm absorption spectra of 10 damped Lyman- systems (DLAs), of which 8 are at redshifts z> 1:3. HI absorption was detected in only one DLA, the z= 0:5318 absorber toward PKS
Implications of 21-cm observations for damped Ly α systems
We present Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope H i 21-cm absorption observations, of candidate and confirmed damped Lyα systems. The derived spin temperatures Tspin are high, in all cases, ∼1000 K or
Surveys for z > 3 Damped Lyα Absorption Systems: The Evolution of Neutral Gas*
We have completed spectroscopic observations using LRIS on the Keck 1 telescope of 30 very high redshift quasars, 11 selected for the presence of damped Lyα absorption systems and 19 with redshifts z
On The Evolution of Damped Lyα Systems to Galactic Disks
The mean metallicity of the thick disk of the Galaxy is 0.5 dex higher than that of the damped Lyα systems. This has been interpreted to argue that stars in the former do not arise out of gas in the
Detection of Warm and Cold Phases of the Neutral ISM in a Damped Lyα Absorber
We present a detailed study of the H I 21 cm absorption system at z = 0.0912 toward the radio quasar B0738+313. The uncommonly narrow main absorption line and weak secondary line are resolved for the
On the Kinematics of the Damped Lyman-α Protogalaxies
We present the first results of an ongoing program to investigate the kinematic properties of high-redshift damped Lyα systems. Because damped Lyα systems are widely believed to be the progenitors of
The formation of galactic discs
We study the population of galactic discs expected in current hierarchical clustering models for structure formation. A rotationally supported disc with exponential surface density profile is assumed
