Buruli ulcer is an indolent necrotizing disease of the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and bone that is caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans. Buruli ulcer is presently the third most common mycobacterial disease of humans, after tuberculosis and leprosy, and the least understood of the three.
