Human behavior is known to be heterogeneous and fluctuates temporally. Many studies have focused on the fluctuation of Inter-Event Times (IETs), the times between one action and the next in various types of human behavior. The existence of this fluctuation cannot be explained by a stationary random Poisson process and is called burstiness. In this study, we collected human physical activity data while specifying the age of the subjects and their situations (e.g., children’s play and adults…

The origin of bursts and heavy tails in human dynamics

TLDR
It is shown that the bursty nature of human behaviour is a consequence of a decision-based queuing process: when individuals execute tasks based on some perceived priority, the timing of the tasks will be heavy tailed, with most tasks being rapidly executed, whereas a few experience very long waiting times.

Analysis of human behavior statistics law based on WeChat Moment

Burstiness and memory in complex systems

TLDR
It is found that for human dynamics memory is weak, and the bursty character is due to the changes in the interevent time distribution, and it is shown that current models lack in their ability to reproduce the activity pattern observed in real systems, opening up avenues for future work.

Measuring burstiness for finite event sequences.

TLDR
An alternative definition of burstiness is suggested that is free from finite-size effects and yet simple, and one can distinguish the finite- size effects from the intrinsic bursty properties in the time series.

Estimating inter-event time distributions from finite observation periods in communication networks

TLDR
This paper models event sequences using stationary renewal processes, and formulates simple heuristics for determining the severity of the bias, and finds that correcting for the bias can lead to qualitatively different results for the tails of the IET distributions.

Scale-free and characteristic time in urban soundscape

Generalized priority-based model for smartphone screen touches.

TLDR
According to the model, each individual has a specific power-law exponent which is tightly related to the effective refractory time constant suggesting that motor processes which influence the fast actions arerelated to the higher cognitive processes governing the longer interevent intervals.
