We have built two fast cluster computing systems (called Sphinx-1 and Sphinx-2) using slow PCs using the Fedora Core-3 Linux operating system, and the LAM-MPI (Message Passing Interface) parallel processing middleware for carrying out the various scientific calculations. The MPI middleware is suitable for dataparallel, task-parallel, and coarse-grain data flow programming and supports random or sequential access to any integral set of data items.
