In our continuing study for structurally and biogenetically interesting natural products from marine organisms, Okinawan marine sponges Agelas spp. were investigated, resulting in the isolation of 18 unique alkaloids including five dimeric bromopyrrole alkaloids (1-5), ten monomeric bromopyrrole alkaloids (6-15), and three conjugates of monomeric bromopyrrole alkaloid and hydroxykynurenine (16-18). In this mini-review, the isolation, structure elucidation, and antimicrobial activities of these… Expand

Microbial and Functional Biodiversity Patterns in Sponges that Accumulate Bromopyrrole Alkaloids Suggest Horizontal Gene Transfer of Halogenase Genes
TLDR
The sponge holobionts (e.g., Agelas spp.) with the greatest number of sequences related to clustered, interspaced, short, palindromic repeats (CRISPRs) exhibited the fewest phage halogenases, suggesting a possible mechanism of protection from phage infection by the sponge host. Expand
Thio acid-mediated conversion of azides to amides - exploratory studies en route to oroidin alkaloids.
The utility of the thio acid-azide coupling reaction to afford amides is explored in imidazole-containing substrates for application in the total synthesis of examples of oroidin alkaloids. GoodExpand
Formal Total Synthesis of Manzacidin B via Sequential Diastereodivergent Henry Reaction.
TLDR
A formal total synthesis of manzacidin B is described, which shows how taking advantage of noncovalent interactions, such as intramolecular hydrogen bonding and chelation, could diastereodivergently control the stereoselectivity of the Henry reaction. Expand
Synthesis of Polysubstituted Pyrroles through a Formal [4 + 1] Cycloaddition/E1cb Elimination/Aromatization Sequence of Sulfur Ylides and α,β-Unsaturated Imines.
TLDR
A reaction sequence comprising a formal [4 + 1] cycloaddition, an E1cb elimination, and an aromatization process is described, achieving polysubstituted pyrroles from easily available chemicals, sulfur ylides, and α,β-unsaturated imines. Expand
