Background: Depression in adolescence is a common and serious mental health problem. In the UK, access to evidence-based psychological treatments is limited, and training and employing therapists to deliver these is expensive. Brief behavioural activation for the treatment of depression (BATD) has great potential for use with adolescents and to be delivered by a range of healthcare professionals, but there is limited empirical investigation with this group. Aims: To adapt BATD for depressed…
Brief Behavioural Activation (Brief BA) in secondary schools: a feasibility study examining acceptability and practical considerations
TLDR
Initial data suggest that Brief BA is feasible to deliver in schools and was integrated successfully with some adaptation, demand was high, and the service was highly acceptable to students, parents and school staff.
Exploring Behavioural Activation as a treatment for low mood within CAMHS: An IPA study of adolescent experiences
TLDR
How BA can enhance resiliency skills for adolescents experiencing low mood is detailed and some of the change process at inter and intrapersonal levels is illustrated, which should guide further youth-led research.
A pilot practice-based outcomes evaluation of low-intensity cognitive behavioural interventions delivered by postgraduate trainees to children and young people with mild to moderate anxiety or low mood: an efficient way forward in mental health care?
TLDR
Results are promising in terms of the capacity to train a graduate workforce to deliver a range of low-intensity CB interventions to CYP experiencing mild to moderate depression or anxiety-based difficulties in either CAMHS or school settings, increasing capacity across the system.
Behavioral activation for children and adolescents: a systematic review of progress and promise
TLDR
There is some limited evidence to support BA as effective for young people, and fully powered trials are now required, with expansion to delivery in low- and middle-income settings, and detailed consideration of implementation issues that consider culture and environment.
An early intervention for adolescent depression targeting emotional mental images and memory specificity: a process evaluation
TLDR
The findings establish processing negative experiences as a core intervention component, extend it to include letting go of these memories, and highlight that reducing the impact of negative memories is valued by participants.
“… if I care about stuff, then other people care about me”. Adolescents’ experiences of helpful and unhelpful aspects of brief behavioural activation therapy for depression
TLDR
Findings indicated that the participants found behavioural activation strategies, identifying values and valued activities, and therapist support to be helpful, while the duration of therapy and difficulties in maintaining improvements were identified as unhelpful aspects.
A school-based case series to examine the feasibility and acceptability of a PCT-informed psychological intervention that combines client-led counselling (Method of levels) and a parent–child activity (Shared goals)
ABSTRACT Psychological difficulties among young people are common. Various initiatives are being proposed in schools, yet no evidence-based data is available on how to address family difficulties
Acceptability and Utility of an Open-Access, Online Single-Session Intervention Platform for Adolescent Mental Health
TLDR
Results support the perceived acceptability and utility of open-access, free-of-charge SSIs for youth experiencing internalizing distress.
The presence of co-morbid mental health problems in a cohort of adolescents with chronic fatigue syndrome
TLDR
Clinicians should assess for the presence of anxiety and depressive disorders in adolescents with CFS using a validated psychiatric interview and treatment should be flexible enough to accommodate fatigue, depression and anxiety.
Depressive symptoms in adolescents with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS): Are rates higher than in controls and do depressive symptoms affect outcome?
TLDR
Depressive symptoms are more prominent in adolescents with CFS than in HCs or illness controls, and appear to remain over time during a naturalistic follow-up where no treatment was provided.
