In an experiment, African villagers could form groups to share risk in a gamble choice game. The extent to which grouping arrangements were or could be enforced and, hence, the importance of trust and social enforcement as supports for group formation were exogenously varied. Participants in the experiment are much more likely to form a group with individuals of the same sex.
