Breakfast has long been promoted as the most important meal of the day. However, the lack of standard definitions of breakfast, breakfast consumers, and breakfast skippers, and the lack of a description of how "important" the meal is, especially compared with other meals, has hampered the ability to confirm this long-held belief. This review discusses potential definitions of breakfast and breakfast skippers, and how these definitions can affect how researchers, nutrition educators, and policy…

Breakfast: A Crucial Meal for Adolescents’ Cognitive Performance According to Their Nutritional Status. The Cogni-Action Project
TLDR
It is suggested that adolescents who have breakfast just prior to a cognitive demand and regularly have a high quality breakfast have better cognitive performance than those who do not, and Educative nutritional strategies should be prioritized.
Nutritional breakfast quality and cardiometabolic risk factors: Health Survey of São Paulo, a population-based study
TLDR
Breakfast quality of Brazilian adults needs improvement with disparities across some sociodemographic factors, and BQI was associated with lower odds of cardiometabolic risk factors, suggesting a beneficial effect in this population and emphasising the role of breakfast in reducing the risk of CVD.

Is breakfast the most important meal of the day?
TLDR
It is reported that both lean and obese adults expended less energy during the morning when remaining in the fasted state than when consuming a prescribed breakfast, and extended morning fasting may not result in expected weight loss due to compensatory adjustments in physical activity thermogenesis.
Methodological Challenges in Studies Examining the Effects of Breakfast on Cognitive Performance and Appetite in Children and Adolescents123
TLDR
This review aims to provide a comprehensive discussion of the key methodological challenges and considerations in studies assessing the effect of breakfast on cognitive performance and appetite control, along with recommendations for future research.
Breakfast: A Good Habit, not a Repetitive Custom
TLDR
How the breakfast ‘environment’ and the composition of breakfast meals might be improved, particularly in children, so as to maintain the breakfast eating habit throughout life is discussed.
The Effects of Breakfast and Breakfast Composition on Cognition in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review.
TLDR
The findings suggest that breakfast consumption relative to fasting has a short-term (same morning) positive domain-specific effect on cognition, with effects more apparent in undernourished children.
A systematic review of the effect of breakfast on the cognitive performance of children and adolescents
TLDR
The evidence indicates that breakfast consumption is more beneficial than skipping breakfast, but this effect is more apparent in children whose nutritional status is compromised, and recommendations for the size and composition of an optimal breakfast for children's cognitive function are made.
The effect of breakfast composition and energy contribution on cognitive and academic performance: a systematic review.
TLDR
There does appear to be emerging, but still equivocal, evidence that a lower postprandial glycemic response is beneficial to cognitive performance, and the hypothesis of a better and more sustained performance with a breakfast providing >20% daily energy intake still needs substantiation.
Nutrient Intake, Diet Quality, and Weight Measures in Breakfast Patterns Consumed by Children Compared with Breakfast Skippers: NHANES 2001–2008
TLDR
There are dietary and weight advantages of consuming breakfast, especially breakfasts that include grains, cereals, LFM, and fruit/ FJ, in contrast to the potential adverse effects of skipping breakfast.
The effects of breakfast on behavior and academic performance in children and adolescents
TLDR
There was suggestive evidence that habitual breakfast (frequency and quality) and SBPs have a positive effect on children's academic performance with clearest effects on mathematic and arithmetic grades in undernourished children.
