The present paper is a pioneering study on the Brachyura bycatch associated with the artisan prawn fisheries at the mouth of the Amazon River. The study was conducted at four collection sites distributed along the mouth of the Amazon River between the months of January/2009 and January/2010. The animals were caught using handcrafted traps called “matapi”, which are used by prawn fisherman in the region. Twenty matapis were used at each collection site. A total of 145 specimens were captured and…

Natural diet and feeding habits of a freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium carcinus: Crustacea, Decapoda) in the estuary of the Amazon River
The results indicated that M. carcinus can be considered omnivorous species, but with an important carnivorous component, similar to that found in other Macrobrachium species.
Nauplius-The Journal of The Brazilian Crustacean Society
Plesionika edwardsii ( J.F. Brandt in von Middendorf, 1851) is a cosmopolitan species that inhabits cold temperate and subarctic waters between 50 and 680 m. In the Azorean region, this is the second
Efficiency of Different Traps and Baits for Catching Freshwater Prawn Macrobrachium Spp. for Broodstock Development
Catching of wild freshwater prawns in Palawan is done by using different fishing gears, including baited traps. However, there are only limited studies related to the efficiency of these traps on
Sensory systems and feeding behaviour of the giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, and the marine whiteleg shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei
This chapter summarizes information about the sensory basis of the feeding behaviour of the giant freshwater prawn and the marine whiteleg shrimp and the role of sensory appendages in feeding of L. vannamei.
Reproductive biology of Macrobrachium surinamicum (Decapoda: Palaemonidae) in the Amazon River mouth
O objetivo deste trabalho foi abordar aspectos gerais da biologia reprodutiva de M. surinamicum de quatro importantes areas de pesca artesanal de camarao localizada na foz do rio Amazonas (Amapa e Para).
Extension range of four species of freshwater crabs (Decapoda: Trichodactylidae) in the state of Maranhão, Northeastern Brazil
The present study provides a list of the freshwater crab species of the family Trichodactylidae recorded from the state of Maranhão, northeastern Brazil, along with information about their distribution, and adds new records to more basins.

Population dynamics of Trichodactylus borellianus (Crustacea Decapoda Brachyura) and interactions with the aquatic vegetation of the Paraná River (South America, Argentina)
Animal populations have a certain synchronization between their fluctuations and the environmental factors which have a direct influence on density, sex ratio and recruitment. Trichodactylus
Distribuição de caranguejos Trichodactylidae (Crustacea, Brachyura) em alagados do Pantanal Mato-Grossense (Brasil) e sua correlação com a proximidade do rio Cuiabá e cobertura vegetal
There are few papers about crabs in the Pantanal area and that works are mainly with carcinofauna of rivers and lakes. Pantanal is the biggest floodplain of the world, located in a sedimentary basin
Occurrence and abundance of carcino-group bycatch in sea-bob shrimp, Xiphopenaeus kroyeri Heller (Crustacea, Decapoda) fishery, in Armação do Itapocoroy, Penha, Santa Catarina, Brazil
The present study aims to analyze the occurrence and the abundance of the group of crustaceans' by-catch of sea-bob shrimp, in the region of Armacao do Itapocoroy, Penha, Santa Catarina, and indicates seasonal variations in the crustacean group.
Biologia e pesca do camarão sete-barbas Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (Heller) (Crustacea, Penaeidae), na Armação do Itapocoroy, Penha, Santa Catarina, Brasil
The biology and fishery of the sea-bob-shrimp at Armacao do Itapocoroy, Penha, indicated an isometric growth and first maturity occurring between 7.3 and 7.9 cm, reached in six months, and the artisanal fishery showed a higher pressure over the adult stock.
Life History and Ecology of the Freshwater Caridean Shrimp, Palaemonetes paludosus (Gibbes)
The life history and ecology of the freshwater caridean shrimp, Palaemonetes paludosus (Gibbes), was determined from monthly collections for 1 year in the Hillsborough River near Tampa, Florida.
Biogeography of the Freshwater Decapods in the La Plata Basin, South America
The aim was to elucidate the distribution patterns and relationships of current freshwater decapod fauna in terms of the different geo-climatic processes at work in the La Plata system, and recognized 13 zones based on their unique environmental characteristics.
Distribution and abundance of freshwater crabs (Potamonautes spp.) in rivers draining Mt Kenya, East Africa
Little is known about population densities of freshwater crabs, or their ecological importance, in African rivers. This study aimed to quantify crab abundance in rivers draining Mt Kenya.
Aseasonality in the abundance and life history of an ecologically dominant freshwater crab in the Rift Valley, Kenya
The Chinga crab illustrates a third life history pattern, with no clear breeding season, and this may be common among tropical species, which allows the species to maintain high biomass without seasonal pulses and, perhaps, to dominate community and ecosystem processes.
Biology , Fisheries , and Aquaculture of the Amazon River Prawn Macrobrachium amazonicum : A Review
The Amazon River prawn Macrobrachium amazonicum is widely distributed in South America, and has a high economic value for fisheries and aquaculture, but its many local populations show morphological, physiological, and ecological differences.
