Attachment to territory is a powerful force in both state and system formation. Individuals are often willing to sacrifice their taxes and even their lives for territory considered part of their polity. This paper proposes one “bottomup” mechanism to explain why people are willing to sacrifice for territory considered part of their polity, and explains why and which territory will be considered part of the polity.
