Botryosphaeria spp. are common endophytes and canker pathogens of many woody plants including eucalypts. Eucalyptus globulus, a species endemic to eastern Australia, dominates the plantation industry in Western Australia. Plantations are often adjacent to remnant native eucalypt forest and each vegetation type (plantation or forest) could harbour pathogens to which the other has not been exposed. A survey of Botryosphaeria spp. associated with E. globulus and native Eucalyptus spp. in Western…

Pathogenicity tests showed that the 12 species of Botryosphaeriaceae are pathogenic to three Eucalyptus clones and that Lasiodiplodia species are the most aggressive.
Botryosphaeriaceae associated with Eucalyptus canker diseases in Colombia
- Biology
- 2009
Two species of the Botryosphaeriaceae were found to occur on E. grandis in Colombia and could be distinguished easily based on DNA sequences of the ITS1/ITS2 rDNA region and EF1-α, in addition to conidial sizes.

Interestingly, different species dominate on Eucalyptus in different regions of the world, irrespective of whether other species occur in that environment or not, while their pathogenicity and potential influence on Eukaryptus plantations and surrounding native plant communities are considered.

Pathogenic Botryosphaeriaceae associated with Mangifera indica in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia
- BiologyEuropean Journal of Plant Pathology

It appears that either geographic isolation or the unique growing conditions in the Kimberley may have provided an effective barrier to the acquisition or establishment of known botryosphaeriaceous pathogens.

Diversity and pathogenicity of Botryosphaeriaceae on declining Ostrya carpinifolia in Slovenia and Italy following extreme weather conditions
- BiologyEuropean Journal of Forest Research
- 2010
Diversity based on AFLP markers indicates that the dieback observed in O. carpinifolia is probably associated with a heterogenous population of B. dothidea, which emerged from a latent state in response to changed climate conditions.

It is concluded that B. australis, B. ribis and B. stevensii are more virulent than the other species studied, confirming earlier suggestions that the generic concept of Botryosphaeria should be expanded to include genera with septate ascospores and Diplodia anamorphs.
