Bose-Einstein Condensation in a Dilute Gas:. the First 70 Years and Some Recent Experiments
@inproceedings{Cornell2003BoseEinsteinCI, title={Bose-Einstein Condensation in a Dilute Gas:. the First 70 Years and Some Recent Experiments}, author={Eric Allin Cornell and Carl E. Wieman and H. T. Nieh}, year={2003} }
Bose-Einstein condensation, or BEC, has a long and rich history dating from the early 1920s. In this article we will trace briefly over this history and some of the developments in physics that made possible our successful pursuit of BEC in a gas. We will then discuss what was involved in this quest. In this discussion we will go beyond the usual technical description to try and address certain questions that we now hear frequently, but are not covered in our past research papers. These are…

Recent experimental and theoretical work has shown that there are conditions in which a trapped, low-density Bose gas behaves like the one-dimensional delta-function Bose gas solved years ago by Lieb…
A study on quantum gases: bosons in optical lattices and the one-dimensional interacting Bose gas
- Physics

Bosonic atoms confined in optical lattices are described by the Bose-Hubbard model and can exist in two different phases, Mott insulator or superfluid, depending on the strength of the system…

We consider the Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing an attractive Bose gas trapped to a quasi 2D layer by means of a purely harmonic potential, and which rotates at a fixed speed of rotation…
Quantum reflection of Bose-Einstein Condensates
- Physics

Recent developments in atom optics have brought Bose-Einstein condensates within 1 μm of solid surfaces where the atom-surface interactions can no longer be ignored. At longrange, the atom-surface…
Buffer gas cooled atoms and molecules: Production, collisional studies, and applications

In this thesis we present the results of three different projects, two experimental and one theoretical. First, we report on the demonstration and characterization of a high-flux beam source for…
Collisionally Inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein Condensates

This dissertation studies solitary waves in collisionally inhomogeneous BoseEinstein condensates in a magnetic trap using a quasi-1D mean-field model. We introduce a model for Bose-Einstein…
Bose gases in the Gross-Pitaevskii limit: a survey of some rigorous results

We review some mathematical work on the Bose gas in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime. We start with the classical results by Lieb, Seiringer and Yngvason on the ground state energy and by Lieb and…
Space-borne Bose–Einstein condensation for precision interferometry
- PhysicsNature
- 2018
Experiments conducted during the six minutes of in-space flight are reported on, which provide insights into conducting cold-atom experiments in space, such as precision interferometry, and pave the way to miniaturizingcold-atom and photon-based quantum information concepts for satellite-based implementation.

Lyapunov-Schmidt theory is used to establish the persistence and bifurcation of the linear states in the presence of attractive and repulsive nonlinear inter-particle interactions.
Coherent control of optical information with matter wave dynamics
- PhysicsNature
- 2007
It is demonstrated that a slow light pulse can be stopped and stored in one Bose–Einstein condensates and subsequently revived from a totally different condensate, 160 μm away; information is transferred through conversion of the optical pulse into a travelling matter wave.
