Boryllithium: Isolation, Characterization, and Reactivity as a Boryl Anion
@article{Segawa2006BoryllithiumIC, title={Boryllithium: Isolation, Characterization, and Reactivity as a Boryl Anion}, author={Yasutomo Segawa and Makoto Yamashita and Kyoko Nozaki}, journal={Science}, year={2006}, volume={314}, pages={113 - 115} }
Nucleophilic, anionic boryl compounds are long-sought but elusive species. We report that reductive cleavage of the boron-bromine bond in N,N′-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-2-bromo-2,3-dihydro-1H-1,3,2-diazaborole by lithium naphthalenide afforded the corresponding boryllithium, which is isoelectronic with an N-heterocyclic carbene. The structure of the boryllithium determined by x-ray crystallography was consistent with sp2 boron hybridization and revealed a boron-lithium bond length of 2.291 ± 0…

A borolyl anion based on the borole framework has now been found to display single-electron-transfer (SET) reactivity in its reaction with triorganotetrel halides, which has implications for the understanding of boron-based nucleophilic behavior and the emergent role ofboron radicals in synthesis.

While carboxylation of the boron centre was kinetically feasible, the products of B-carboxylated species were not thermodynamically favored relative to the observed C-2 carboxyated species, which were formed preferably due to the generation of both C-C and B-O bonds.

DFT studies indicate further that the molecules lack a significant electrophilic character at boron but may act as potential σ-donor/π-acceptor ligands through the phosphorus atom, and suggest the presence of pure single bonds without any contribution from P→B dative π-interactions.
