Classification in psychopathology is a problem in applied mathematics; it answers the empirical question "Is the latent structure of these phenotypic indicator correlations taxonic (categories) or nontaxonic (dimensions, factors)?" It is not a matter of convention or preference. Two taxometric procedures, MAMBAC and MAXCOV-HITMAX, provide independent tests of the taxonic conjecture and satisfactorily accurate estimates of the taxon base rate, the latent means, and the valid and false-positive…

Taxometric Methods and the Classification and Comorbidity of Mental Disorders: Methodological and Conceptual Considerations
Taxometric methods have become increasingly popular in research on the structure of psychopathology. The majority of this research has entailed study of a single psychopathological construct that
Pseudotaxonicity in MAMBAC and MAXCOV analyses of rating-scale data: turning continua into classes by manipulating observer's expectations.
TLDR
Using an experimental method in which the cognitive sets of raters were manipulated as dimensional versus categorical, it is demonstrated that pseudotaxonicity can be created readily with rating scale measures, suggesting that researchers avoid an exclusive reliance on rating scales when conducting taxometrics investigations.
Seeking verisimilitude in a class: a systematic review of evidence that the criterial clinical symptoms of schizophrenia are taxonic.
TLDR
There is no reason to seriously doubt a single-distribution model of schizophrenia because there is no evidence that provides a serious test of this null hypothesis.
Taxometric analyses in psychological research and in classification of mental disorders
The issue of whether manifest psychological variables comprise a latent taxonic or dimensional structure is essential to the contemporary psychology and psychiatry. Fortunately, this issue can be
Evaluating Latent Discontinuity in Cognitive Vulnerability to Panic: A Taxometric Investigation
Taxometrics is a statistical tool that can be used to discern psychopathological categories from continua. In this study, taxometric analyses were conducted to determine whether a psychopathological
A taxometric investigation of psychopathy in women
Dimensions over categories: a meta-analysis of taxometric research
TLDR
The meta-analytic findings support the conclusion that the great majority of psychological differences between people are latently continuous, and that psychopathology is no exception.
Are Negative Symptoms Dimensional or Categorical? Detection and Validation of Deficit Schizophrenia With Taxometric and Latent Variable Mixture Models.
TLDR
Although a categorical approach is validated, a hybrid categorical-dimensional conceptualization of negative symptoms also has validity for the prediction of external variables.

Confirming the latent structure and base rate of schizotypy: a taxometric analysis.
TLDR
The results strongly suggest that schizotypy, as assessed by the PAS, is taxonic at the latent level with a general population taxon base rate of approximately .10.
Simple regression-based procedures for taxometric investigations.
TLDR
This work presents a simple taxometric procedure, MAXSLOPE, based on regression plots for pairs of variables, easily implemented using commonly available software and intuitively rather easy to understand, and applies it to two artificial datasets.

Schizotaxia, Schizotypy, Schizophrenia
TLDR
While I have not until recently begun any systematic research efforts on this baffling disorder, I felt that to share with you some of my thoughts, based though they are upon clinical impressions in the context of selected research by others, might be an acceptable use of this occasion.
Factors and Taxa, Traits and Types, Differences of Degree and Differences in Kind
TLDR
The intuitive concept of taxonicity is to be explicated by a combination of formal-numerical and causal criteria, and taxometric methods should include consistency tests that provide Popperian risk of strong discorroboration.
Construct validity in psychological tests.
TLDR
The present interpretation of construct validity is not "official" and deals with some areas where the Committee would probably not be unanimous, but the present writers are solely responsible for this attempt to explain the concept and elaborate its implications.
Taxometric analysis. I: Detecting taxonicity with two quantitative indicators using means above and below a sliding cut (MAMBAC procedure)
TLDR
Given two quantitative indicators of a conjectured latent taxon, a statistical function defined as the difference between the observed means for cases of one indicator falling above and below a sliding cut indicates whether the latent structure is taxonic or nontaxonic.
Some ruminations on the validation of clinical procedures.
It is becoming almost a cliché to say that “clinical psychology is in a state of ferment,” a remark which is ambiguous as to whether the “ferment” is a healthy or pathological condition. Dr. E.

In recent years several issues, some of great moral, legal, and policy importance, have arisen which impel the philosophically inclined to seek clarification about the meaning of "disease" and
Psychopathy as a taxon: evidence that psychopaths are a discrete class.
TLDR
Taxometric analyses were applied to the construct of psychopathy and to several variables reflecting antisocial childhood, adult criminality, and criminal recidivism and supported the existence of a taxon underlying psychopathy.
